Keeper of Hours

An owl watches from a nest of paper, gold, and turning time.

By the artist's own account, this is her most mature and complete work — the painting her whole symbolic practice is built toward. A great owl gazes out from a dense, layered ground of collage, old paper, gold leaf, leaf-forms and the quiet machinery of clocks, a smaller owl tucked at its shoulder.

Harbour Gold

The harbour at sundown, every ripple turned to beaten gold.

The showpiece of the collection. An Atlantic harbour at sunset — sailboats riding at their moorings, the dark mass of the far shore studded with the first town lights, and the whole tidal basin turned to molten gold by a sky of torn amber cloud.

Crimson Drift

A crimson medusa descending through a column of cold light.

A single magenta jellyfish drifts downward through a sea of pearl-grey water, its bell catching the warm shaft of light that falls from the surface. Doljenkova lets the pigment bloom and granulate so the water itself seems alive with anemones and drifting spores.

Sovereign

A swan in full portrait — white fire, black mask, gold bill.

If one painting shows the ceiling of Doljenkova's realism, this is it. A swan turns its head in three-quarter profile, the white of the plumage built almost entirely from the warm and cool greys around it, the black mask velvety and exact, the orange bill glowing against a wash of ochre and teal spatter.

The Haul-Out

A harbour seal rests on the rocks, the swell at its back.

A coastal portrait that rewards a long look: a spotted harbour seal sits up on weed-slick rock, the Atlantic swell rolling grey-green behind it. The modelling of the seal — dappled silver, rust and slate, the whiskers and wet dark eye — shows just how far Doljenkova's watercolour realism can reach, while the loosely brushed sea keeps it alive and unposed.
