About this piece
Two green sea turtles swim out of a wash of teal and gold directly toward the viewer — a larger one in front, every scute and wrinkle of the face modelled with patient realism, and a smaller companion drifting behind. Doljenkova lets the water do half the work: blooms of granulating blue and ochre that read as sunlight breaking through the surface. The eyes are unhurried and ancient. One of her warmest, most inviting marine pieces — a painting that seems to come to meet you.
