About this piece
By the artist's own account, this is her most mature and complete work — the painting her whole symbolic practice is built toward. A great owl gazes out from a dense, layered ground of collage, old paper, gold leaf, leaf-forms and the quiet machinery of clocks, a smaller owl tucked at its shoulder. Every element earns its place: the bird as keeper and witness, the layers as memory, the gold as something held against time. It rewards the long, slow look — new fragments of text and pattern surfacing the more you give it. The cornerstone of the collection, and the clearest statement of where Elena's work is going.
