About this piece
A giraffe turns and lifts its head against a glowing wash of ochre and honey, the long neck running off the edge of the sheet. Doljenkova handles the dappled coat with confident wet-into-wet patches and keeps the modelling of the muzzle and eye soft and affectionate. There is real tenderness in the gaze — curiosity rather than spectacle. A warm, characterful portrait that carries a wall on colour alone.
