About this piece
Painted head-on, the hippo fills the sheet with warm sienna and umber, its expression somewhere between weariness and benediction. Doljenkova builds the muzzle in soft granulating washes, then drops in the speckled stipple of wet skin — a technical flourish that reads as utterly tactile. A thread of cool blue sky behind keeps the warmth from tipping into heaviness. Tender, humorous, and quietly dignified.
